VIRTUALLY IGNITE THE LONGEST DARKEST NIGHT

31st ANNUAL KENSINGTON MARKET WINTER SOLSTICE PARADE-O-RAMA
VIRTUAL EDITION

This year the annual Kensington Market Winter Solstice Parade will be live streamed from Red Pepper Spectacle Arts’ studio space. The virtual broadcast will launch on Monday December 21, 2020, from 7:00 pm. to 10:00 pm.

Entitled a Parade – O – Rama, this year’s show of shadow, light and puppetry will once again guide Toronto through the longest darkest night. Always non-profit, handmade and commercial-free, Toronto’s night parade will end with the traditional but virtual live Fire Finale.

Gabi Caruso, Red Pepper Spectacle Arts’ artistic director, explains how it will happen:

“We are making a miniature ‘cranky’ or moving panorama scroll theatre with shadow and light puppet imagery that will follow the annual parade order. We are also prerecording the Solstice performing artists in the market in selected locations. All will be edited together — the miniature shadow theatre performance with the highlighted performing artists.”

This year, the celebration will be dedicated to the founder of Toronto’s favourite festival of lights, Ida Carnevale, who passed away in Italy, earlier this year. “She is our inspiration and the mother of this event, and we are making a video to project on the studio storefront window as well as honouring Ida in the Parade – O – Rama.”  Gabi Caruso said.
